Can My Animals Benefit From Essential Oils?

skeletonIn recent years, aromatherapy and essential oils have soared in popularity. If you are using essential oils and you are benefitting from their use, you may have wondered if they might be helpful to your pet. The answer is yes! Your pets can benefit from the use of Essential Oils.

I often utilize essential oils as part of my practice when treating your pets. Using all natural essential oils is beneficial in the care and wellbeing of your pet.

Some things to know –

● Animals have many more olfactory receptors in their noses – specialized cells that detect odor molecules. For example, a human has 5-6 million of these cells, a rabbit, 100 million and a dog, 220 million. Thus, animals are much more sensitive to essential oils than humans.

● Cats are particularly sensitive to essential oils, so take care. Avoid “hot” oils, like cinnamon, wintergreen, birch, clove, thyme and oregano. This is just a short list of oils cats are sensitive to so I recommend that you consult with someone who has experience with oil and animals.

● What is safe for cats? Clary sage, frankincense, elemi, geranium, helichrysum, roman chamomile, rosemary and valerian essential oils that are known to come from a pure source.

● Never expose fish, birds, or rodents to essential oils, even by diffusion.

● Dogs can see great benefit from essential oils, however; the dog must be a minimum age of 10 weeks old. Lavender, for example, can be used for car ride anxiety, allergies, burns, and ulcers, to name a few.

● Large animals, such as horses, can benefit highly from essential oils. Examples include lavender and valerian for anxiety, eucalyptus and balsam fir for sore muscles. A quick sniff of basil can sharpen the mind prior to an event and bergamot can be used on skin irritations and insect bites.

I use Young Living Essential Oils with my own pets and my patients. They have an Animal Scents line that is perfect for your pet. My favorites include Lavender, Copaiba, Valor, Marjoram, and Trauma Life.
